What is Teal?
Teal organisations are values-driven with a systems-thinking, holistic understanding of their purpose and impact. Hierarchical management is replaced with self-organized, self-managed teams which adapt flexibly to changing circumstances to achieve the organization’s purpose whilst adhering to its values. A Teal organisation derives it purpose from fulfilling a valuable function for the community, not from blind serving the narrow needs of just one stakeholder group. Teal aspires to describe the next stage in the evolution of human consciousness.
Core Questions
The working group will develop a map for creating a next-generation startup:
- What does leadership look like?
- How to build and align the team?
- How to build community?
- How to be more resilient, scalable and sustainable?
- When and how to define the organisation’s values and purpose, stakeholder model, governance, legal form, decision making, recognition and compensation?
- How to support the growth, learning and development of its people?
- Who are the relevant partners and communities?
- What are the processes/tools?
- What are the resourcing and funding options?
Why Teal?
Current business models and frameworks are a product of capital-driven, hierarchical organisations and are failing to create the disruptive innovation needed to address many of the challenges we face today. They are mechanistic, treating employees as replaceable cogs, in return many employees are neither happy nor fully engaged.
The goals of companies should be to contribute to progress towards creating a better future for all. We believe a different organisation is needed to build effective product-services which serve society, as everywhere we look people crave more humane experiences (HX). Simply put a company which can create these will be a more successful business.
Teal organisations are soulful workplaces where our full-range of talents is nurtured and our deepest aspirations are honoured. Teal brings a holistic understanding of human and team psychology making it possible to consciously create community and foster empathic communication resulting in better collaboration, a more effective organisation and increased happiness. Fitting in with the basic human drive for fairness, Teal is the more humane way to work together.
Why Teal for Startups?
Every year 250,000 startups are created in the U.K, 2.3 million in the European Union, imagine the impact if we could help even a few percent of them be Teal? The EU five year startup survival rate is only 45%, how can Teal principles reduce this high failure rate?
Teal organisations have incredible potential however the ideas are very new. What is needed is a clear map, structured and easy to follow advice on how to create and develop these organisations.
How and what will we produce? A Conversation, A Whitepaper, A Community
We believe that an eco-centric model rather than ego-centric would be the most appropriate way co-create something new that will help startups in their Teal journey. We are forming a small and diverse group to map-out the journey of a Teal startup. We hope to define the development stages and the journey of a Teal start-up plotting the core questions which need to be asked and the decisions which need to be made along the way.
The planned timeline is a two month working group, with online discussion and real-world workshops in London, United Kingdom. We would expect a commitment of 48 hours is needed from each co-creator during this period, and a minimum for a few hours from reviewers. Together the working group will develop a whitepaper and seed a Teal startup community and ecosystem.
The white paper will be published into the public domain with the co-creation team and reviewers recognised as contributors.
